What do I have to do in the BHS test?

What is involved in a basic handling skills test?

On 1 November 2012, changes came into effect to strengthen the Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST) and improve the safety of motorcyclists.
The Basic Handling Skills Test consists of four stages:

Stage 1. Basic turn and stop

Stage 2. Figure of eight and park

Stage 3. Linking figures of eight

Stage 4. Increased speed and emergency stop

In completing the tasks above you will be assessed against the relevant assessment items below.  These are what are considered the 'General Tasks':

Looking - In the correct direction
Signalling - Using indicator correctly and timely
Head Checks - Making head checks before changing position
Lateral position - Riding position of motorcycle within the lane / cornering
Control - Correct use of all Motorcycle Controls, not stalling etc
Speed - Using appropriate speed, approx 20kph for Emergency Stop
Parking observation - Correct checking before parking
Parking movement - Correct placement of Motorcycle when parking

There are also other requirements that the Instructor will be looking out for while you conduct these exercises.

Critical Errors are:
Leaves Lane - Rides over a circle line (white) or outside of the first course line (yellow)
Loss of Control - Self explanatory
Wheel loses Contact - Front or Rear wheel loses contact with test area surface

Immediate Failure Errors are:

Leaves Course - Goes past the first course line and makes contact with the outside (white) line
Falls off - Self explanatory
Fails to follow instructions - Self Explanatory
Intervention - The Instructor has to intervene to prevent injury or loss

You will NOT PASS the Basic Handling Skills Test if You make more than;
15 'general' errors or
You make more than 2 critical errors or
You get 1 Immediate Failure Error

Please note, the BHS test is conducted in a 'confined area' as per the NZTA requirements. If you do not have very good low speed skills / have difficulty with the throttle or tight cornering - we do highly recommend a practice session before sitting the test.  We offer a range of different courses depending on your experience level - SEE BELOW
